University of Maryland, College Park Policy and Procedures Concerning Student Employment

It is the policy of UMCP to encourage part-time employment of students as a means of financing their education and enhancing the University experience. UMCP offers a variety of programs and services to students to assist them in obtaining appropriate part-time employment.
A. College Work-Study Program
- Under this program, employment may be awarded to students who: a. are in need of earnings from such employment to pursue a course of study at a college or university, and b. are capable of maintaining good standing while employed.
- A maximum of 20 hours per week may be worked during the semester, and a maximum of 40 hours per week during the summer.
- The amount of money that may be earned is determined by the student's demonstrated need.
- Application should be made by completing the Financial Aid Form available at the Financial Aid Office.
- The Financial Aid Office makes awards based on demonstrated need and an award letter is sent to the student.
- Upon receipt of an award letter, the student should contact the Job Referral Service located in Room 3120 of Hornbake Library for placement.
B. Dining Hall Workshop Program
- Under this program students earn their board by working approximately 12 hours per week.
- The workload may be increased at the completion of a successful semester upon request from the student.
- Application is made by completing the Financial Aid Form available at the Financial Aid Office.
- The Financial Aid Office makes an award based on demonstrated need and an award letter is sent to the student.
- Application for placement is made directly through Dining Services. Application must be made in person, and the student should have a schedule of classes.
C. Library Workshop Program
- Application may be made by completing the Financial Aid Form available in the Financial Aid Office.
- The Financial Aid Office makes an award based on demonstrated need.
- The amount of the award is credited to the student's account.
D. Job Referral Services
This is a clearinghouse for all students seeking employment, and for employers seeking help. The service includes listings of full-time summer employment both on and off campus. There is no charge for this service.

E. Conditions of Student Employment
Each department of the campus should establish procedures to provide essential general working conditions for student employees who are not participating in the College Park Work Study Program. These guidelines should include, but are not limited to the following:
- a brief statement of job responsibilities for each student employee;
- a clear understanding of the hours to be worked, developed by coordinating the availability of the student and the needs of the department;
- structure of student wages;
- general working conditions;
- duration of employment, e.g., two weeks, one semester; and
- a method whereby students may resolve job-related problems.
