University Policy on Faculty Appointment Letters and Summer Compensation

- The terms and conditions of faculty appointments shall be stated in a written appointment letter signed by the University and the faculty appointee.
- Tenured or tenure-track faculty appointments shall be either fiscal year appointments or academic year appointments. The standard fiscal year faculty appointment shall begin on July 1 and end on June 30. The standard academic year appointment shall be for 9 months beginning on August 23 and ending on May 22. Faculty currently on 9.5-month or 10-month academic year appointments may remain on 9.5-month or 10-month academic year appointments, respectively, or convert to a 9-month academic year appointment. Faculty currently on fiscal year appointments may also convert to 9-month academic year appointments. Once a faculty member converts to a 9-month academic year appointment, however, all future academic year appointments shall be limited to 9-month academic year appointments.
- Faculty members on a 9-month academic year appointment may earn up to 33.3% of their academic year salary as additional summer compensation from research, administrative assignments and teaching, provided some portion of the additional compensation derives from research funding through the university, and may earn up to 30% of their academic year salary if the additional summer compensation derives solely from summer teaching or administrative assignments. The standard summer course load for faculty members on a 9-month academic year appointment is up to 3 three-credit courses. Faculty members on a 9.5-month or 10-month academic year appointment may earn up to 26.3% of their academic year salary as additional summer compensation from research, administrative assignments and teaching, provided some portion of the additional compensation derives from research funding through the university, and may earn up to up to 20% of their academic year appointment salary if the additional summer compensation derives solely from summer teaching or administrative assignments. The standard summer course load for faculty members on a 9.5- month or 10- month academic year appointment is up to 2 three-credit courses.
